Merry Xmas

Gonna be setting off from Hue soon. Gonna just visit some of the historical sites before heading back to Hanoi.

Quite glad dat I've had new experiences! And finally fulfiled my "beach & magarita" wish dat i've been dreaming of.

Vietnam Central Highlands

Ok we're now in Hue. Our final stop before making our way back to SG via the soft sleeper train. BTW, we tried all modes of transport possible already. haha. Motorbike, 55-seater buses, sleeper buses and trains. So the most comfortable is still the train! Yeah so for our final stretch, we've decided to tk the train. But unfortunately, also the most exp.

Yeah so central highlands was beautiful. It's like a collection of telly-tubby hills! hahahah..totally reminded me of our trg during 2005 SEA Games when we had to chiong up the nick-named bedok reservoir "hill". so the central highlands was filled with telly-tubby hills of different heights! The place is green! =) and the sky is lined with clouds dat looked like those in animations =) It was cool and sunny! It was really amazing how the people were able to construct the road (aka the ho chi minh trail) during the war time on such highlands.

It's Xmas eve! so advance merry xmas to all!

Leaving Hoi An

So yes, i cant access facebook. And am moving on to some mountain area in vietnam today. =)

To Mich: yes, i tailored a dress. It's kinda purple. =)Gonna collect it later due to some alterations. hopefully i can still fit into it by the time i get back to SG.

And I FINALLY had my "beach & magarita"! Actually it's not magarita, but tequila cos the cafe din offer magarita. I walked like 4km++++ to get to the Cua Dai Beach.haha. not sure of the actual distance but it was a nice walk..into the country-side. The beach was quiet. Always have dis liking towards Vietnamese beach. Less commercialised compared to the ones on Thailand.

It's another cold cold morning..and waiting to set off!

Hoi An ..Continued

Cos I cant log on to facebook, so here's some thing to follow up:-
To: Joesie, there's no free wireless so far. but we can access internet from the hotel's computers. A quiet and peaceful town, just for R & R =)

To: KT, according to the guide, HCM is sunny! =)

And I've just tailored some thing =) And made a pair of shoes! haha. it's quite cool how they tried to measure my feet. Too bad I forgot to take a picture of how they took my measurements.

So step one, I had to place my foot on a piece of paper. Then the lady drew the circumference of my foot. haha. Step 2, she measured the widest part of my foot. And lastly, measured the width of where my arch was.

The rain has cleared and the weather is cooling. but still considered cold for me.

Rainy Vietnam

So for the last few days which we are here, Vietnam has been cold and wet. but at least when our guide brought us to the "China Beach", the weather has been merciful. There were slight rays of sun light. =)
This morning in Hoi An is yet another rainy morning. Hopefully the weather will change for the better in the afternoon. Hoi an is a much quieter town, as compared to hanoi. Hanoi was terribly crowded and dusty (created by the random road constructions). It's so much more peaceful over here. no wonder an aussie couple we met during our Halang Bay tour was able to stay here up to 6 days!
The internet over here at dis hotel does not allow guests to use facebook. so im left with blogging as an option! =)
Im waiting for my hot vietnamese coffee to come by ..=)

I alwayz find it funny how my dad sits in my car. He alwaz look uncomfortable..like dunno where to place his hands. Some times, he'll juz be grabbing by the side of the seat.

Ok i might be a dangerous driver some times. But I think the reason in cos he's so used to his bike dat he doesnt noe where to place his hands. =)

I would like a 许毅元 too! =)

Friday, November 20, 2009

It has been a long while since I posted some things. The mad schedule has not ended for me yet.
Tmr's gonna be another weekend of races- the annual River Regatta. Some times I cant believe how time flies. I cant remember dis is going to be my "how many-th" regatta. Not exactly excited, just waiting to experience the fun all over again. The competitiveness of the 300m race. Teams coming in neck to neck. Will there be another round of collision?? (mmm...)

The whole of last weekend and the past weekdays were spent in m'sia. I feel quite "kampong-ish" =) The peace and tranquility of the nature. It will be better if there were no mosquitoes =)

I saw meteors for the first time of my life in Tanjong Piai. and it occurred twice in a row. But it was too fast for me to make any wishes.

It was also the first time i drove a forrester thou it was only for a short distance ard the NJ compound (cos i went out to buy kopi for my colleagues). I din dare to really step on the accelerator. cos im afraid dat it will be too powerful. so in the end, i drove a 2.0 litre car slower den my 1.1 litre Pistachio. My colleague even had to call me to ask where did i go to..how come I took so long to return!

Egg Lovers?

Recently I realised that some of my students are over-eating eggs. Yeah the White which contains a wholesome of PROTEIN. but has one of the "deadliest" quantity of cholestrol in the yolk.

According to a reply from dietitian at NUH, one can eat up to a MAX of 4 egg YOLKS A WEEK. & on average, if one is between 18-60, you can eat up to 12 egg whites a day if the individual is not taking protein from other sources.

I thought it was quite an informative piece of article, especially for athletes.

Why SIA sponsored an NZ team
Terrence Voon explains why Singapore's Dragon Boat Association needs more marketing.
________________________________________
THE furore over Singapore Airline's sponsorship of a New Zealand side at the recent World Dragon Boat Championships has raised the hackles of some Singaporeans.

But to criticise the airline for not funding the Republic's youth team instead may not be the fairest thing to do.

Questions must be raised about how the sport is run and what kind of official funding, if any, was made available to the young dragon boaters in the first place.

Mr Dennis Tan, the father of one of the Singapore rowers, painted an emotive picture of how he and his child struggled to raise money for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, only to be confronted by a Kiwi team emblazoned with the SIA logo at the event.

His disappointment is heartfelt, if not understandable.

Earlier this week, I spoke to officials from the Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA), a national sports body which had previously only made the news after five national rowers perished in a tragic accident in Cambodia two years ago.

The SDBA's stark financial reality is this: As one of the 10 sports ranked in the fourth tier of the Singapore Sports Council's annual funding review, they receive between $100,000 to $200,000 from government coffers each year.

Sending the 49 student rowers to Prague for the World Championships would have drained these funds completely.

To be fair, the SDBA boasts two big-hitting sponsors: Singapore Pools and the Singapore Tourism Board.

But it is not known how much the two organisations contribute to the sport in terms of actual cash.

What we do know is that the SDBA can only afford to upkeep a senior national team and that all it did was to "endorse" the juniors' participation at the World Championships.

For a sport which has now delivered international honours, it is criminal to simply continue giving young talented rowers a pat on their back and sending them on their way — without forking out a single cent.

The SDBA needs to regroup and find a way to maintain a formal national youth squad, and not rely on schools, parents and students to do the hard work for them.

They also need to take a more aggressive approach to securing sponsorship — witness how sports like netball produce glossy brochures and customised marketing proposals to woo potential sponsors.

Armed with a world title and a little more marketing savvy, it shouldn't be too hard to make sponsors — even those at SIA — to sit up and take notice.

Follow Up: SIA defends Kiwi deal

From the Straits Times Sports Section:

SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) has defended its decision to sponsor a New Zealand team over the Republic's World Championships junior dragon boat side, saying it cannot be supporting every local sport.

SIA provides sponsorship in cash and in kind to local sports, ranging from the Singapore Sports School and the Singapore National Olympic Council to the Singapore National Paralympic Council, its spokesman Nicholas Ionides said.

'As much as we would like to, it is unfortunately not possible for us to support every sport, however,' he said.

'In this particular instance, the cooperation with the New Zealand dragon boat team was limited and was a local initiative by our New Zealand station to support the community we operate in.'

The national carrier was responding to a letter by Dennis Tan, the father of one of the Singapore dragon boaters, in The Straits Times Forum yesterday. He had expressed disappointment over SIA's choice of teams.

The Singapore team, comprising 45 National Junior College (NJC) students and four from Hwa Chong Institution, had won the World Championships Junior trophy in Prague from Aug 26-30.

Despite making their debut at the competition, Singapore won the award - given to the top Under-18 nation - by winning four golds, three silvers and one bronze. They had to fend off stiff competition from 24 other countries, including powerhouses China and Russia.

Tan's feelings were shared by members of the dragon boat team, among them NJC rower Alyssa Lim.

'The New Zealand team were staying in the same hotel and we saw the Singapore Airlines logo on their polo tees. It was a little disappointing that they sponsored a team from another country.'

However, it is not uncommon for international companies to sponsor sports teams from other countries.

Mr Yong made a follow up clarification:
'We did not approach SIA for sponsorship, so I don?t think we can blame them.'

From the Straits Times Forum

Below is an excerpt of an article written to the Straits Times Forum by one of the parent of our kids.

Please read till the very last line

Struggling Singaporeans and lucky Kiwis

Singapore's world championship-winning junior dragon boat team had to toil to raise funds for the Prague meet, according to a parent, compared to the more fortunate New Zealand team which was sponsored by Singapore Airlines. -- PHOTO: NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE

AS THE parent of a rower from the victorious Singapore junior dragon boat team, I was glowing with pride - and gratified - to read Tuesday's report, 'Dragon boaters roar in Prague'.

For the past year or more, my daughter trained seven days a week and squeezed in additional time and labour between training to scour housing estates, collecting old newspapers and drink cans to help raise money to fund the trip to the Prague meet. She lugged these items from home to school as well. All this in addition to keeping up with her school work. My home was turned into a karung guni depot, stocked with old newspapers and drink cans.

Relatives chipped in by collecting these items and passing them to us during weekend family gatherings.

My neighbours must have thought we had financial problems.

I had to sacrifice my sleep to drive my daughter to training to save travel time and so she could get as much sleep as possible. She missed most weekend family gatherings around the dining table because of training or she was simply too pooped.

She - and we - made these sacrifices with one aim in mind: to send a national team to Prague and do Singapore proud. And it was mission accomplished for the 49-member squad of students who won four gold medals, three silvers and a bronze.

But here is the ironically disappointing postscript: My daughter and the team discovered that the national team from New Zealand which took part in the same championships was sponsored - by Singapore Airlines.

Just bought Penny Dai's new album. Really like the songs in it..The first song goes..

Their meat types have to be ordered from the waitresses one. I like the beef balls heh. As well as the marinated beef. The dumplings (those that had jiu cai in them) were good too!

hot & steamy...

the yuan yang pot. man..the tom yum one is super hottttt...

my chubby cheeks

n he's full haha

The only thing i was not too pleased was there was no free flow of drinks! we had to pay extra for the drinks dat we ordered. As it was not included in the $17.50.
Altogether we spent $39 on a super duper filling dinner

IT and me.

Sigh just realised dat my comp doesnt come with a bluetooth installed =( so which means I have to get an adaptor to be able to access bluetooth.

Recently I've gotten myself a few new softwares but again, I've yet to explore them despite having so much time on hand before school commences. Think it's when I have too much time on hand dat I dunno how to handle. haha.

Kayano 14 @ 50% off Retail

Just bought a Kayano 14 (Turquoise) from this shop " Sports Station" located at Suntec. It was having a 50% discount on all Asics shoes. Amongst the range were GT 2130, Kayano (Golden) and a few pairs of 1130. the 50% discount tag caught my eye immediately when I saw the towers of Asics shoes.

Initially I was still contemplating on whether to get the 2130 which I have always been wearing. The price was also cheaper- $96 after discount! But in the end I still got the Kayano cos i wanted some thing dat has more cushioning and able to support longer distance of running. My knees started giving me problems recently.

And after I decided on the Kayano, I deliberated on the size. whether to get a size 7 or 7.5. The golden coloured Kayano only had size 7 left. But it felt slightly tight, so i took the turquoise one instead. It is my first blue based shoes after many many years. My first pair of running shoes was this v cool-looking Reebok dat my dad bought for me when i was in pri sch. heh..=)

Gonna try out my new shoes tmr!

Panasonic Service Center 24June2009

my panasonic fx 38 juz started giving me problem =( there seems to be some particles stuck at the lens. So I went to their service center some where @ queensway. Actually not v happy with the service staff who attended to me. Spoke to me as if i owed her money or sthg. *bleah*

When she passed me my repair slip, nv even tell me when will I be expecting the service to be done. And nv direct me to any numbers which I cld call to enquire bout my repair..until I asked.

The only thing which she was nice bout was she offered to help me make a photocopy of my receipt (which was already fading..) cos i had to produce my warranty card along with my receipt. That was to verify the date of purchase. But if the date of purchase was already written on the warranty card, why is there a need to produce the receipt again ( if..*touchwood) if i were to come back again for repairs.

sad..need one week for the repairs to be done. Cant tk photo of the race this weekend =(

Shots from the Junior World Champs Hockey Semis

Since SK stadium was so near to my place, it was a pretty worthwhile match to catch. The Dutch made the pitch look real small as they run to tackle the ball. Skills and aggression were their winning formula. The first half saw the Kiwis leading 1-0. But by the start of the second match, they were leading and eventually emerged as the winner with a score of 4-1.

First half ending..

Players resuming positions after 10 min half time break

Getting ready to FOCUS

Aggressive play!

Scoring their final 4th Goal

Think my body hasnt been too lucky these days.

First I contacted "snake" in chinese terms or shingles as the western drs will call it. It started out as a small patch at the right side of my neck =( It doesnt itch but has a biting pain. So after much consultation with the ppl ard me, I decided to go see a sinseh on Monday. Cos most ppl agrees dat the chinese dr is more specialized to treat the problem.

According to the sinseh, the shingles formed due to the remaining "toxin" from our childhood chicken pox (man..it was 20yrs ago for me..)I was bewildered as it sounded q impossible..the toxin has hid itself for 20yrs before emerging! But my team mate confirmed it by telling me even the western dr provides the same explanation.

I spent $85 on the treatment..super heartache. And of cos shocked at the amount I have to pay. The treatment required some form of "burning" on my body..sigh. And the sinseh further prescribed some oral med and this "powder + water"-looking cream for me to apply.

For the last few days, it seems like it's subsiding. But this morning, I saw a huge "pop" at my back! grrr....This skin problem will take some time to go away..according to many ppl ard me. I'll juz try to complete the medication and see how it goes.

What is more painful is dat I have to refrain from certain food..ok the list goes "chicken, egg (omg), duck, soy bean stuffs including bean curd =(, seafood (it's ok..cos I dun take seafood). So when I go to the zham-cai fan stall these days, i'll have problems settling for what to eat.

On top of this troubling skin problem =(, my right wisdom tooth oso started to get my gums infected. So I spent another 76dollars curing the problem. Sigh..And every thing seemed to be popping out from e right side of my body. So no NUTS, chocs and durians for me until the gum stop swelling.

Boo!

Mum's Bday @ Hae Bok Korean Restaurant

One thing I must clarify for the restaurant is that it's located in Furama City Center (Eu Tong Sen St)and not Furama Waterfront. As explained by the owner, they were located at Furama Riverfront hotel for 15 years until last year when they shifted out. When I was looking up online for its location, there were contradictions on its location. But thank goodness I clarified with the owner when I called to make a booking. Parking was $3.20/entry after 5pm.

The restaurant was simple and cosy. And not surprising, the other customers seated ard us were all Koreans, speaking their native language and drinking.

We ordered the Korean BBQ of beef and pork. And we were bbq-ing it on our own..=)Even the gas stove is "MADE IN KOREA"!

dad and bro doing the bbq haha

And of cos i ordered the bibibamp..yummy! Other dishes like the korean cold noodles and of cos kimchi soup!

complimentary side dishes !

Mummy cooking the noodles in the kimchi soup

My face looking rounder after all the dinners and food after Macau!

I find the food to my liking but my mum and bro did find it a bit too salty for them.
One thing which was really commendable bout the restaurant is its service and we appreciate the hospitality of the owner. For several times, he came over to our table to ask if we were ok. Gave us refill for the complimentary dishes ( i asked for kimchi and spinach!), refill the kimchi soup and wheat tea for us. When I told him dat we were here to celebrate my mum's bday, he even offered to cook us seaweed soup! He said dat in Korea ppl will drink seaweed soup on their birthdays or when ladies first gave birth. But cos we were already leaving, so we told him next time. =)He even walked us to the lift..made me feel dat it was a worthwhile meal!
btw, the lunch menu is cheaper den the dinner menu. haha..so next time if i come, i'll come during lunch time. For 4 of us, we spent $107.

June..

I still feel better driving with 95 Petrol, compared to 98. 98 is too smooth for my car, makes the brake almost non-existent =( 95 gives me more control! Did my first e-brake dis morning as i was exiting Pioneer-North Road. Think i felt a moment of "not-in-control" as my car roll downslope. It was too fast..and I had to make an abrupt brake! I cld hear the screeching of my brakes for goodness! arghh..i cant wait for my car's servicing. And I realised dat my steering wheel has been tilted to the left. kao..im at the 4600km already..1400km to go!

Last night was KTV night again with my NJ team mates. I brought my camera! but too bad there was no battery! =(

Just saw this advert on the sales of photoshop software going for $99 (but $98 @ ntu eight flags). Really tempted! Been wanting to try out the software long ago..juz nv get on to it. Perhaps now it's good time to have some hands-on on it. =)

Jolin's new song which i tried to sing at k-box yest. But got disrupted by the service staff who came in with the bill! This MV is the KTV version, gives me the chance to sing to it over and over again at home!

Finally Used My Camera Again after so long...

Breakfast after this morning's trg!

WHile he was driving

Going for dinner @ Geylang after my k-song session. oo and i blur blur put a 1-dollar coupon when it was supposed to be free parking!
